Interoperability
Whether your AI tool can connect with your EMR, IEP software, or billing system, and the privacy implications when it does. In SLP practice, interoperability determines whether a tool saves you time or creates double work. A documentation AI that can't export to your district's IEP platform means you're copying and pasting, which introduces errors and multiplies the surfaces where PHI can leak.
The ability of different software systems to exchange, interpret, and use data across boundaries without manual intervention. Interoperability ranges from basic file export (CSV, PDF) to full API integration with real-time data synchronization. In healthcare, interoperability standards like HL7 FHIR govern how clinical data moves between systems, but most AI tools SLPs encounter operate outside these standards entirely.
Why SLPs Need to Know This
Every time you move client data from one system to another (dictating into an AI tool, pasting output into an EMR, exporting a report to IEP software), you create a potential point of failure. Interoperability is not just a convenience question. It is a privacy question, an accuracy question, and a workflow question. Tools that integrate cleanly reduce risk. Tools that require manual data transfer between platforms multiply it.

- Each system that touches client data needs its own privacy and security evaluation
- AI tools that operate outside your EMR or IEP platform are often outside your organization’s BAA coverage

Practical Guide
- Map your data flow. Before adopting any AI tool, trace exactly where client data goes: your input, the AI system, the output destination, and any intermediate storage
- Ask about export formats. Can the tool output directly into your EMR or IEP system, or are you copying and pasting?
- Check BAA coverage at every node. A BAA with your AI tool means nothing if the integration layer between that tool and your EMR is uncovered
- Evaluate what data the integration shares. A tool that connects to your calendar needs less scrutiny than one that connects to your client records
